One big difference I can see between relationships in China and the West, especially represented in the TV show, is that in China, a relationship does not only intimately involve the couple who are in it, but their respective families, to an extent that may shock Westerners. In this sense, what it takes to sustain a relationship in China might be quite different from that in the West, although there are certain commonalities.

There seems to be a great deal of anxiety about where Chinese society is headed. Like we hear in the states so often, “it used to be that…” only in China time is condensed.

It makes me think a lot about what I’m looking for with love. Do I want passionate, abrupt love, or stable, static, reliable love? Is one harder to find than the other? So many questions to ask. Is there a link to this Luohun Shidai with English subtitles?

Women were not equal to men in those days – women’s wages were about half of what men earned back then. Most of our friends also had luohun marriages and many, like me, are still married to that first partner. My parents had a luohun marriage and are still together after 67 years. We started with nothing and worked and saved. I was married for 9 years and had two children before we were able to buy a small house. I am all for luohun marriage!
